A storage unit cleanout and a mover pickup are different jobs that often start at the same roll-up door. Pickup means keep items travel to a home or another unit. Cleanout means the unit has to empty, and some or all of it is haul-away.

Decide whether the unit is a pickup, a cleanout, or both

Stand at the door and assign every visible pile. Keep, donate, throw away. If most of it is keep, you want a storage unit pickup plan. If most of it is discard, you want junk removal. If it is mixed, you want two scopes or one company that will write both lines.

Kearny Mesa, Otay Mesa, and Oceanside storage rows don’t share one access rule. Ask the facility how an outside crew signs in, where a truck can stand, and whether two companies can work the aisle at once.

Drive-up units with a roll-up on the asphalt are a different carry than an indoor multi-story facility with an elevator and a long cart run. A drive-up unit in Otay Mesa can load at the door. An indoor facility in Mission Valley may need a reserved elevator and a cart that the facility owns. Write the facility type on the request. Photos of the aisle help. They don’t replace the facility’s current access rules.

Don’t say “empty the unit” if you still need the dresser delivered to a Mira Mesa apartment. Those are two destinations. If the keep pile is going to a second storage unit, write that second unit’s gate rules too. Pickup crews quote travel between two gates. Junk crews quote volume leaving one gate. Mix those sentences and the paper stops matching.

Confirm facility access for each kind of crew

Start with the facility, not the quote. Ask about gate hours, elevator or cart rules, insurance paperwork, and whether the crew can use the facility’s dolly. Pickup crews and junk crews may need the same gate code and still have different load plans.

The storage services page is for arranging storage as part of a move. This page is for an existing unit that has to change.

If the facility wants the unit swept, photographed, or inspected at lockout, write that as an owner task unless a company accepts it in writing.

City curb rules apply only when the vehicle sits on a public street. Inside a private storage aisle, the facility’s rules win.

Split keep inventory from haul-away volume

Keep items get an inventory, a destination, and household-mover terms. Haul-away volume gets a junk scope. Junk removal in this market often runs from a $95 single-item minimum to about $550 to $650 for a full truckload. Household local-move bands are a different table. Don’t compare a junk truckload to a 2-bedroom home move.

Ask who packs unmarked totes. Unlabeled boxes are how keep items get thrown away. Open them before move day if you can.

Review what movers will not take for paint, fuel, and other refusals that show up in old units.

Put two destinations in writing when they exist

A common San Diego pattern is keep furniture to an apartment and the rest off the property. Write both addresses. Write which pile goes where. If donation is involved, name who drives that pile. Don’t assume the household mover makes a donation stop.

Overnight or extra storage between the unit and the new home is a third destination. Ask for it as its own line.

For the household-goods portion of a California move, verify the carrier in the BHGS Household Mover License Search. Read BHGS consumer information before you sign.

Compare cleanout quotes separately from pickup quotes

Send junk companies the haul-away list. Send movers the keep list, destination, and facility access notes. If you want one company to do both, say so, and still require both lists on the paper.

Ask each company to put these items in writing:

  • Keep versus haul-away
  • Facility access conditions the quote assumed
  • Packing included or excluded
  • Destination addresses
  • How extras are approved if the unit holds more than the photos
  • The legal company name and any household mover license details

Master Movers San Diego matches customers with independent licensed movers. The brand does not empty storage units and does not set facility fees.

When to call us

Call when the unit is mixed and you need a licensed mover for the keep pile, a junk crew for the rest, or a match that can write both. Call (858) 400-4069 and we’ll connect you with a permitted local mover.
