A college dorm move-in in San Diego is a small inventory inside someone else’s building rules. Campus housing, not the mover, sets the window, the elevator, and what furniture is already in the room. Confirm those rules before you book labor.

Confirm the campus housing window first

Read the current move-in instructions from the actual campus housing office. UC San Diego, San Diego State, University of San Diego, Point Loma Nazarene, and Cal State San Marcos do not share one calendar. This page does not publish a date, because housing offices change them. Use the notice you were sent.

Ask about vehicle time limits, unloading zones, carts, and whether hired movers are allowed in the building. Some campuses want families only. Some allow a crew. Get the current answer in writing from housing, then send it to the mover.

UC San Diego housing on the La Jolla mesa, SDSU halls near College Area, and USD on the hill above Linda Vista do not share a curb. A family car in a 20-minute loop and a 26-foot truck in that same loop are different problems. If housing only allows passenger vehicles, say “labor meets us at the hall” in the estimate request. If housing allows a truck in a named lot, send that lot name. Don’t paste last year’s Facebook comment into the booking.

If the student is moving into an off-campus apartment instead of a residence hall, use the apartment movers guide. Dorm move-in is the residence-hall case.

Build a small-move inventory that matches the room

List what is actually going: mini fridge, monitor, bed linens, clothes, a chair, a few boxes. Don’t request a 3-bedroom crew for a fridge and four totes.

Ask housing what furniture is already in the room. Don’t haul a bed the campus already provides. Measure the mini fridge and the tightest door. Dorm corridors and freight elevators vary by hall, not by university brand.

The small moves and deliveries service is often the right booking path. Apartment moving fits when the student is going into a private apartment with full furniture.

Labor-only in this market often runs $120 to $180 per hour with two movers and a two-hour minimum. Small-move jobs can also be quoted as a flat piece. Those are market bands, not a campus fee and not a quote from this brand.

Plan parking, elevators, and what the family carries

Campus load zones fill up. Name who stays with the vehicle and who stays with the room. Movers do not watch a car in a 15-minute stall while everyone rides an elevator.

Ask whether a hand truck is allowed in the hall. Ask whether the elevator is keyed. A La Jolla campus hill and a Mission Valley hall have different walks from the curb. Confirm the building name, not just the school name.

The family should carry passports, laptops, medicines, and anything the student needs that night. Those items should not wait on a truck in a campus loop.

City curb rules still apply off campus. On campus, housing and campus police instructions win.

Assign packing and roommate handoffs

If a roommate already occupies the room, agree what side of the room is open. Don’t book a crew into a dispute about a lofted bed.

Name who packs. A parent packing at a Clairemont house the night before is a different job from a crew packing a storage unit in Kearny Mesa. Write the origin address. Dorm move-in often has two origins: home and storage.

For a California-only household or student-goods move, verify the carrier in the BHGS Household Mover License Search. Read BHGS consumer information before you sign.

Compare the same dorm scope in writing

Send every candidate the same packet: campus, hall, move-in window, inventory, origin address, and housing rules you were given. If one company quotes a full apartment move and another quotes two hours of labor, you are not comparing a dorm move-in.

Ask the mover to put these items in writing:

  • The inventory used for the estimate
  • Campus access conditions the quote assumed
  • Truck included or excluded
  • Packing included or excluded
  • How extras are approved if the hall refuses a piece
  • The legal company name and household mover license details

Master Movers San Diego matches families with independent licensed movers. The brand does not work for the campus and does not perform the move.

When to call us

Call when housing has published the window and you need a licensed crew for the boxes and furniture. Call (858) 400-4069 and we’ll connect you with a permitted local mover.
